However, around this core gameplay device there is no real story mode. The Co-op Campaign plays out in a series of seven “Episodes.” Each episode represents a city around the globe and has four missions that follow four characters for that city across a series of connected tasks, mission to mission. You can play online with an open or private lobby, or offline with AI teammates taking the other 3 characters in the party. The first issue is: while the storyline connects the missions, the co-op jump in/out nature of the gameplay means no progression carries over. So you end one mission with a sweet collection of weapons and gear acquired along the way and begin the next right back at the base weapon loadout for the character class. A base loadout that, by the way, is unchangeable. No matter what kind of shotgun and machine gun you picked up in the last mission, no matter what you might have sunk XP into to upgrade in the menu screen before the mission, the Fixer class always loads into the next co-op game with the scout rifle and silenced pistol. It’s annoying as a gameplay device and forces you into playing character models rather than building out s-tier character loadouts, which is fine. But where it inhibits the game is it just further removes you from investing in the characters and story. You can’t even jump into the next mission immediately from the last. It’s back to the lobby each time, further breaking the narrative flow.

It’s a tricky thing getting a computer to process loads of information at a time. Graphics are especially intense, which is precisely why we have dedicated hardware, GPUs, to do that complex math. There are also memory constraints with both the movement of assets to and from the cache and having enough RAM to handle everything that is in the queue. There are lots of tricks to managing these limitations. For example, ever wonder why so many games have long hallway or elevator sections between action set pieces or levels? It’s because the hallway is the trick that gives the engine time to clear the old assets and load in the new. Other areas of programming do similar things. According to review aggregator Metacritic, the game received “mixed or average reviews” from critics. Game Informer compared it to Left 4 Dead series and praised its shooting mechanics, visuals and story, but criticized its soundtrack and lack of non-vocal player interactions.

Palworld was released on January 19, 2024, through Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, and is available with Game Pass from day one. The game is expected to remain in early access until at least 2025. Planned features for future updates include PvP modes, guild raids, and cross-server Pal trading. On June 10, 2024, it was announced that the game would be released in early access for macOS later that year. On June 24, 2024, it was teased to be released on PlayStation 5. Pocketpair announced the first major expansion to be released on June 27, 2024, which includes new Pals, a new island called Sakurajima, and other new content. On September 25, 2024, the PlayStation 5 version of the game was released.

Shortly after release, users on Twitter alleged similarities between the designs of several Pals and Pokémon, with a user claiming to show evidence of plagiarism of game assets. However, the CEO of Pocketpair stated that the character concepts were mostly designed by a single graduate student hired in 2021 following the company’s public recruitment run for new illustrators. He also states that the game has cleared legal reviews. On January 24, The Pokémon Company issued a statement indirectly citing the game, writing: ” have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024 we intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon.” Pocketpair’s CEO stated that the company has received death threats from users on Twitter.

Conversely, Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer criticized Palworld for relying too heavily on shock humor about animal abuse and sweatshop labor in its gameplay, which PC Gamer derided as “mid-2000s Newgrounds edgelord” and “over-committing to the bit”, with Rock Paper Shotgun arguing the gameplay mechanics and presentation of Pals fundamentally misunderstood the meanings and appeal behind Pokémon and the monster-catching genre. It also attracted some criticism for the unoriginal designs of Pals and mechanics lifted from other titles, which VG247 thought undermined a game “worth admiring”.

In an interview with ASCII Japan, Mizobe talked about considering turning Palworld into a live service, free-to-play game. He looked to the likes of PUBG and Fall Guys, both of which went from a premium to a free model. Nothing was set in stone, but it sounded like Palworld could make the jump to sustain itself.
