Much like the first game, Steel Division: Normandy ‘44, the sequel is peerless when it comes to representing the scale of warfare. It offers large maps with strict, unnatural borders to give you a cross-section of a large-scale combat operation. You have tanks, troops, and aircraft under your control, but your focus is always on the battlefield rather than where you’re drawing these forces from.
The graphics are brilliant, as expected, and it’s nice to see a game in a World War II setting with such visual fidelity. Obviously, games like World at War could only do so much with the technology available at the time. WWII, though, far better depicts the bloodiness and brutality of war. Heads pop, limbs are severed, and men are set alight with flamethrowers all around you, as you fight on through the streets, the beaches, the fields, and the snow. There is a great deal of variety in the visuals, more than enough to keep any gore-seeking FPS-lover happy.
Console players have Medal Honor: Frontline for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. A recent reboot took the action to modern times. The first of these had a decent single-player mode but had stellar multiplayer. The sequel of the reboot did not fare as well, however. Developer Respawn Entertainment brought the action back to World War 2 for the VR-exclusive Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, which received mixed reviews despite its ambition.
