It’s Gerrit Cole vs. Jack Flaherty, the World Series Game 1 starters, back for a second round in Game 5. The Yankees did what they needed to do Tuesday night, beating the Dodgers in a bullpen game to give Cole — the Californian now pitching for his childhood favorite team — another chance to take the ball in this World Series. Now he’s got to make it count. Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, has a 2.82 ERA in four starts this postseason.
“Well one, I was happy it was an out. … I think it definitely was one of those moments like here we are, this is a big game. You know Mookie played for the Red Sox for a long time, he’s played a lot of games at Yankee Stadium and I’m sure they’ve given him a hard time throughout his career. So it was one of those moments like here we are, let’s go.”
Behind him, the Yankees bullpen has been taxed heavily over the past three games, as neither Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt nor Luis Gil went longer than four innings. Reliever Clay Holmes has pitched in every game this series; Luke Weaver, Tim Hill, Jake Cousins and Mark Leiter Jr. have appeared in three of four games. Now in the third, Anthony Rizzo had just popped out with the bases loaded. The Yankees squandering another opportunity felt like an inevitability. But on a night where they still struggled with runners in scoring position, Volpe provided the grand-slam salvation this team has been searching for.

Freeman’s homer was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history as well as the third Series walk-off homer of any kind for a team that was trailing, following Joe Carter’s World Series-winning home run for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993 and Kirk Gibson’s Game 1-winning home run for the Dodgers in 1988. In particular, Freeman’s home run was widely compared to Gibson’s off the Athletics’ Dennis Eckersley, as both players were playing through injuries at the time and the Dodgers were down by a run and down to their last out in Game 1 of the World Series. Fox broadcaster Joe Davis’ call of “…she is gone!” echoed that of legendary Dodgers and then-NBC broadcaster Vin Scully for the Gibson homer, and Davis also added, “Gibby, meet Freddie!” Both Gibson’s and Freeman’s home runs were to right field at Dodger Stadium in almost the same spot and both came at 8:37 PM Pacific Time. Game 1 has been widely referred to as one of the greatest World Series games of all time.

However, the next batter, Gleyber Torres, grounded out to end the game and give the Dodgers a 3–0 series lead. Buehler pitched five scoreless innings in the game for the Dodgers to receive the win.

This was the first World Series appearance for the franchise that began its existence as the Montreal Expos in 1969, and moved to Washington, D.C. in 2005 to become the Nationals. The Nationals were also the last team from the 1969 expansion class (which also included the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers—who began as the Seattle Pilots—and San Diego Padres) to earn a trip to the series. Also, after their World Series appearance, all National League (NL) teams had played in at least one World Series. The only American League (AL) team that has yet to play in a World Series is the Seattle Mariners, who were part of the 1977 expansion. Prior to this series, the Astros and Nationals had never played each other in a postseason series, even though Houston played in the NL from 1962 to 2012 before moving to the AL West in 2013. In fact, the Nationals are the only team the Astros have faced in the World Series that they have never faced in a pre-World Series playoff round, since the Astros have faced the White Sox, Dodgers, and Braves during at least one playoff round prior to the World Series. The Astros and Nationals did not play an interleague game in 2019, and last faced each other during the 2017 regular season. The two teams share a spring training site in West Palm Beach, Florida, and opened the 2019 spring training schedule against each other. This was the second World Series to feature two expansion teams, the first being in 2015 between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets. The Astros were deemed as heavy favorites to win the title.
Gymnast and Houston native Simone Biles threw out the ceremonial first pitch of Game 2. The starting pitchers were Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals and Justin Verlander for the Astros. After a walk and a single to start the game, Anthony Rendon batted in two runs with a double. Alex Bregman tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second inning, Verlander recorded the 200th postseason strikeout of his career, surpassing John Smoltz (whose career spanned 1988–2009) and setting a new MLB record.
The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by chef José Andrés. The starting pitchers were Gerrit Cole for Houston and Joe Ross for Washington. Max Scherzer was scheduled to start for Washington, but was scratched about three hours before the game for neck spasms.
This was the first World Series game played in Washington D.C. since October 7, 1933, which was the clinching Game 5 of the New York Giants’ win over the Washington Senators. Chad Cordero of the 2005 Nationals threw out the ceremonial first pitch to former teammate Brian Schneider; former astronaut Buzz Aldrin also threw a ceremonial pitch. Aníbal Sánchez started for the Nationals, while Zack Greinke started for the Astros. In the second inning, Josh Reddick batted in Carlos Correa as Houston scored the game’s first run. In the third inning, Jose Altuve doubled and advanced to third on an error, then scored on an infield single by Michael Brantley, giving the Astros a 2–0 lead. The Nationals loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third, but were unable to score. In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Zimmerman walked then was driven in by a triple by Víctor Robles, cutting the Astros’ lead to 2–1.
